Sron a' Choire Ghairbh

Sròn a' Choire Ghairbh (937m) — "nose of the rough corrie" — is the northern of the two Loch Lochy Munros, paired with Meall na Teanga to the south. The hill rises directly above the western shore of Loch Lochy in the Great Glen and gives one of the great panoramic views of the Glen, looking south down the long sweep of Loch Lochy and Loch Linnhe to Ben Nevis on clear days. Almost always climbed alongside Meall na Teanga from Kilfinnan.

Gaelic: “nose, of the, corrie” · Pronunciation: strawn uh chor-a ghairbh

16km · 824m ascent · 4.6 hrs

Park at Kilfinnan at the south end of Loch Lochy (B8005 from the A82 at North Laggan). Take the rough estate track north-west up the Allt Cam Bhealaich, then climb west onto the Cam Bhealaich pass between the two Munros. From the bealach, climb the steep north-east ridge of Sròn a' Choire Ghairbh directly. Most parties also take in Meall na Teanga to the south. Around 14km return with 1100m of ascent for the pair.

Terrain

The Kilfinnan access track is firm landrover surface lower down. The Allt Cam Bhealaich glen is rough boggy ground with a faint path appearing higher up. The north-east ridge of Sròn a' Choire Ghairbh is sustained heather and broken rock. The summit area is a small cairn on a flat top. The connecting line south to Meall na Teanga via the Cam Bhealaich pass is broad and grassy.

In winter

A serious Loch Lochy winter day. The Cam Bhealaich pass holds wind-loaded snow after westerly storms. The summit ridges develop cornicing on their north sides. The A82 corridor at Loch Lochy stays gritted. The Caledonian Canal locks at Laggan provide a useful waypoint. SAIS Lochaber applies. Phone signal absent above 700m.

Outside the SAIS network. kintail is not covered by a Scottish Avalanche Information Service forecast area. In winter, use MWIS West Highlands ↗ for mountain weather, judge snow stability from first principles, and treat any cornice or wind-loaded slope with extra caution.
