Sgurr Mor

Sgùrr Mòr (1003m) — "big peak" — is the highest Munro of the Glen Kingie group, the remote cluster of hills between Loch Quoich and Loch Arkaig. The hill stands on the watershed dividing Glen Kingie to the south from the Loch Quoich basin to the north. Sgùrr Mòr is often paired with Gairich and Sgùrr an Fhuarain in a long round, with the long approach from the Loch Quoich dam crossing some of the loneliest country in the West Highlands.

Gaelic: “sharp peak, big” · Pronunciation: skoor more

Standard route

Dam road / track 30% · Open hillside 40% · Rocky ridge 30%

17km · 883m ascent · 4.9 hrs

Park at the dam at the eastern end of Loch Quoich on the Kinloch Hourn road. Walk south across the dam, then west along the rough stalkers' path to the bealach east of Sgùrr an Fhuarain. Climb Sgùrr an Fhuarain (Top) and continue west along the long undulating ridge to Sgùrr Mòr. Often extended east over Gairich (Munro). Around 22km with 1200m of ascent for Sgùrr Mòr alone — a long, committing remote day.

Terrain

The Loch Quoich dam is a substantial concrete barrage; cross carefully in strong winds. The stalkers' path west is rough and boggy in places. The Sgùrr an Fhuarain–Sgùrr Mòr connecting ridge is broad heathery hillside with no clear path. The summit is a rocky platform with a large cairn. The Glen Kingie side of the hill falls into one of the wildest valleys in Scotland.

In winter

A serious remote winter day. The Loch Quoich road can be drifted closed; once committed there is no rescue infrastructure for many kilometres. Wind-loaded snow builds on the summit ridge during westerly weather. Mobile reception is absent throughout the day, and the relevant forecast is SAIS Northern Highlands. Most parties tackle this peak with Gairich on a long expedition — in winter, a two-day camping trip is the more realistic plan.

Outside the SAIS network. kintail is not covered by a Scottish Avalanche Information Service forecast area. In winter, use MWIS West Highlands ↗ for mountain weather, judge snow stability from first principles, and treat any cornice or wind-loaded slope with extra caution.
