Our take

Achnanclach puts you at the foot of Foinaven and Arkle — two mountains that look like they were transplanted from the moon. The quartzite scree, the empty moors, the absence of people. This is Scotland at its most alien.

Getting there

From the A838 near Laxford Bridge, follow rough paths southeast into the hills. Allow 1.5 hours. The terrain is typical Sutherland — peat and gneiss.
