Our take
Achnanclach puts you at the foot of Foinaven and Arkle — two mountains that look like they were transplanted from the moon. The quartzite scree, the empty moors, the absence of people. This is Scotland at its most alien.
Getting there
From the A838 near Laxford Bridge, follow rough paths southeast into the hills. Allow 1.5 hours. The terrain is typical Sutherland — peat and gneiss.

Small MBA bothy in fair condition with a fireplace and space for 4. Basic but adequate.
Nearby hills & attractions
Foinaven (911m) and Arkle (787m) are the main draws. The quartzite landscape is geologically unique. Loch Stack is scenic.
When to visit
Best May–September. Winter days are very short at this latitude. The terrain is exposed to northwest weather.
