Lochaber Midges in July — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Swarms likely. Consider relocating to coast, altitude or breezy ground. Ground zero for Scottish midges. Wet, sheltered, west-coast — the trinity that drives the biggest populations in Britain. Glen Nevis, the Mamores, Knoydart and the Road to the Isles are all peak-pressure habitat from late May to mid-September.
Current risk
Lochaber in July: Severe. Swarms likely. Consider relocating to coast, altitude or breezy ground.
When they bite
Peak biting windows are dawn 5–8am and dusk 7–10pm. Peak. Warm humid air, frequent calm overcast spells, and the highest midge population density of the year. A dry hot easterly week can briefly drop the pressure; the default state is continuous Severe.
What to wear
- Smidge repellent (75ml)
- LifeSystems head net
- Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.
Tactical notes
July is the worst month of the year in Lochaber. Adult midge density peaks in the second week, biting pressure is continuous from dusk to dawn on calm humid nights, and every sheltered low-elevation spot in the region is at the maximum end of the risk scale. [Glen Nevis](/glens/glen-nevis), [Glen Coe](/glens/glen-coe), Kinlochleven, the Mallaig road, Inverie, the [Sourlies bothy](/bothies/sourlies) beach, the Loch Ossian shore — none are workable as outdoor evening environments without full kit.
The Knoydart traverse in July (Inverie to Kinloch Hourn or vice versa) is one of the most demanding midge experiences in Britain. The Mam Barrisdale, the Carnach valley, the river meadows below [Sgurr na Ciche](/hillwalking/munros/sgurr-na-ciche) — all genuinely brutal. Bothy nights at [Sourlies](/bothies/sourlies), [Barrisdale](/bothies/barrisdale), A'Chuil are warm-weather but the door discipline is non-negotiable: in, zipped, fire if you can manage it without smoking yourself out.
The weather still rules everything. A dry hot easterly week in the second half of July is a real reset — the midge count can drop by 80 per cent in 48 hours of bone-dry warm wind. Watch the forecast and book trips around it where you can. A week of westerly drizzle in mid-July is the worst case.
The positive frame: the high tops are still walkable. [Ben Nevis](/hillwalking/munros/ben-nevis-beinn-nibheis) Tourist Track in daylight is largely fine. The Mamore Ridge in a steady breeze is fine. The classic ridge walks (Aonach Eagach, [CMD arête](/hillwalking/munros/carn-mor-dearg), Ring of Steall) escape the worst by virtue of altitude and exposure. The trick is starting early, finishing before dusk, and getting yourself into a sealed tent or a closed bothy before 8pm.
Kit: full head net, full repellent, full long-sleeve discipline, full tent mesh. Smidge on hands, neck, face, ankles. The Mountain Bothies Association code on bothy door discipline (in, zip, repellent on people not the bothy) becomes more important than the litter rules in July.
