Lochaber Midges in November — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Ground zero for Scottish midges. Wet, sheltered, west-coast — the trinity that drives the biggest populations in Britain. Glen Nevis, the Mamores, Knoydart and the Road to the Isles are all peak-pressure habitat from late May to mid-September.

Tactical notes
November in Lochaber is winter proper. Snow lying on the tops most years from mid-month, hard frosts in the glens, average highs below 9°C in Fort William. The midge population is back in dormancy and there is zero adult activity anywhere in the region. Nothing about a November trip needs to factor midges in.
For anyone who endured the region's summer midges and is back for a winter weekend — November is a clean slate. The [Glen Nevis](/glens/glen-nevis) valley that was a midge cathedral in July is now wet, dark and entirely insect-free. The [Sourlies bothy](/bothies/sourlies) that was hostile in August is now a cold but biteless winter shelter. Wild camping at Loch Ossian or in upper Glen Quoich is feasible with full winter kit and zero head net considerations.
November planning constraints are all winter-related: short daylight (under 9 hours), wind, snow lie on the high passes, river-crossing risk in flood conditions, avalanche assessment in fresh snow. None have anything to do with insects. The [Ben Nevis](/hillwalking/munros/ben-nevis-beinn-nibheis) north face is starting to come into condition, the Aonach Eagach is a serious winter day, the [Glen Coe](/glens/glen-coe) winter routes are starting their season.
Treat Lochaber as midge-free from late October to early May. November is no exception.
