Severe risk June Lochaber

Lochaber Midges in June — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Swarms likely. Consider relocating to coast, altitude or breezy ground. Ground zero for Scottish midges. Wet, sheltered, west-coast — the trinity that drives the biggest populations in Britain. Glen Nevis, the Mamores, Knoydart and the Road to the Isles are all peak-pressure habitat from late May to mid-September.

Current risk

Lochaber in June: Severe. Swarms likely. Consider relocating to coast, altitude or breezy ground.

When they bite

Peak biting windows are dawn 5–8am and dusk 7–10pm. Peak summer pressure. Lochaber's wet, sheltered, west-coast geography combined with warm humid evenings produces the worst midge concentrations in Britain. Calm overcast days are essentially unworkable below 500m.

What to wear

  • Smidge repellent (75ml)
  • LifeSystems head net
  • Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.

Tactical notes

June in Lochaber is the start of the worst midge season anywhere in Britain. The full hatch is on by the first week of June and by mid-month the lower glens are at their peak. [Glen Nevis](/glens/glen-nevis) below the gorge is functionally unworkable on calm overcast evenings — the campsite empties at 7pm. The Steall meadows, the Polldubh boulders, the Kinlochleven path, Inverie on Knoydart, the [Sourlies bothy](/bothies/sourlies) beach, the Loch Quoich shore — every sheltered low-level spot is hostile by dusk.

The one geographic escape is altitude and exposure. The [Ben Nevis](/hillwalking/munros/ben-nevis-beinn-nibheis) summit, the Mamore high ridge, the Aonach Eagach, the [CMD arête](/hillwalking/munros/carn-mor-dearg), the [Aonach Beag](/hillwalking/munros/aonach-beag-glen-coe-lochaber) plateau — all genuinely midge-light through June if the wind is doing anything at all. The Knoydart passes (Mam Barrisdale, Mam Meadail, the Allt Coire Mhalagain) are hard going at the bothy ends and tolerable in the middle.

Kit is mandatory. Head net worn from the moment you stop walking. Smidge or DEET on all exposed skin. Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer. A tent with proper midge mesh, zipped at all times. No outdoor cooking after about 6pm — cook inside the porch with the door zipped, accept the fire risk. The MBA bothies ([Sourlies](/bothies/sourlies), [Barrisdale](/bothies/barrisdale), A'Chuil) are usable as evening refuges but need door discipline.

The honest framing for June: if you don't have to be in Lochaber, the [Cairngorms](/regions/cairngorms), [Outer Hebrides](/regions/outer-hebrides) or [Galloway](/regions/galloway) are materially easier weeks for hill or bothy trips. If you do have to be in Lochaber (work, family, fixed booking), plan around the kit, the hours, and the geography — high routes by day, sealed-tent evenings, no socialising outside between 7pm and dark.
