Fitful Head

Fitful Head is a dramatic 283m sea-cliff headland on the southern tip of Shetland Mainland, the prominent western flank of the great bay of Quendale. Its name fits the place — winds and weather change in moments here, and the cliffs plunge nearly 300m to the Atlantic.

A service road climbs from the B9122 near Quendale toward the radar station — most walkers leave the road early and traverse onto the cliff edge for the airy summit experience. About 5km return, 1.5-2.5 hours depending on exploration.

Terrain

Service road, short grass and heather. Cliffline is sheer and unfenced — never approach the edge in wind. Excellent seabird viewing in spring and summer.

In winter

Mild but stormy. Cliff-edge gusts can be deadly in winter gales. Wait for a settled day; the views in clear winter light are extraordinary.
