Standard route
heather moorland 60% · boggy ground 25% · grassy summit 15%
Most start from the A712 layby at Craigdews and follow forest tracks west before climbing onto the open Fell. The final mile is across rough heather to the trig — 3 hours return.
Terrain
Forestry road then heather and peat hags. The plateau holds water and walking is heavy after rain.
In winter
Snow rarely persists below 400m here. Boggy ground freezes in cold spells and walking becomes much faster — wait for hard frost if you want easy going.
