Brown Muir

Brown Muir is a low 339m heath on the Moray plain south of Elgin, easily mistaken for a swelling field until the actual prominence and panoramic top becomes obvious. The hill carries a small Bronze Age cairn and traces of an old whisky-bothy track linking it to historic distilleries.

Elevation profile coming with the GPX track

A short approach from a layby on the minor road through Drumferry; follow a forestry-and-farm track north before climbing onto the open heath. About 4km return in 1 to 1.5 hours.

Terrain

Short cropped heather and grass — almost prairie-like compared to higher Speyside hills. One short boggy stretch near the trig is the only awkward ground.

In winter

Coastal influence keeps temperatures milder than Strathspey hills only a short drive south. Sleet rather than snow is the more common winter precipitation; the open heath dries quickly after rain.

Outside the SAIS network. moray is not covered by a Scottish Avalanche Information Service forecast area. In winter, use MWIS West Highlands ↗ for mountain weather, judge snow stability from first principles, and treat any cornice or wind-loaded slope with extra caution.
