Our take

Shenavall has the single best view from any bothy in Scotland — you step outside and An Teallach fills the sky. The Fisherfield wilderness beyond is the most remote landscape in mainland Britain. The catch is the river crossing on the approach, which in spate is genuinely dangerous. Check weather, carry walking poles, and be prepared to turn back.

Getting there

From Corrie Hallie, follow the stalkers path over the bealach and down into Strath na Sealga. The final descent is steep and rough. The Abhainn Strath na Sealga must be crossed — there is no bridge, and in spate this crossing is dangerous. Some walkers approach via Gruinard River from the north, which avoids the river crossing.

What to expect inside

Large, well-built estate bothy with a main room, side rooms and an upstairs sleeping area. Two fireplaces. Stone walls and a solid roof. The estate maintains it, not the MBA, so respect the privilege. A shovel and brush are provided — leave it cleaner than you found it.

Nearby hills & attractions

An Teallach (1,062m) rises directly behind — one of Scotland's finest mountains. The Fisherfield Six (A' Mhaighdean, Ruadh Stac Mor, Beinn Tarsuinn, Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair, Sgurr Ban, Beinn a' Chlaidheimh) are all accessible from here.

When to visit

The river crossing makes this bothy weather-dependent year-round. After prolonged rain, turning back is the correct decision. Deer stalking season (August–October) means consulting the estate before visiting. Winter requires full mountaineering equipment for An Teallach.
