Our take
Gelder Shiel is the polite bothy — clean, maintained, on the Royal estate. The walk-in is trivially short. Use it as a base for Lochnagar, which is a superb mountain by any standard. Respect the estate — this bothy exists because Balmoral allows it.

When to visit
Short approach makes this viable year-round. Lochnagar holds snow well into spring. The estate may restrict access during shooting season — check before visiting. The Royal family uses Balmoral in August–September.
Wildfire risk — May to October
Dry conditions increase wildfire risk during summer. Never light fires in the open. Use the bothy fireplace only, and ensure it is fully out before you leave.
