Glas-allt-Shiel

A substantial Victorian shooting lodge at the head of Loch Muick that operates as an open shelter — once Queen Victoria's retreat after Prince Albert's death. The open bothy in the lodge's outbuilding passed to MBA care in 2019, by agreement with Balmoral Estate.

Our take

Glas-allt-Shiel is the Highland palace as an open shelter — unusually grand for what walkers expect from a bothy. The Lochnagar approach from here is shorter than from the Spittal of Glenmuick visitor centre. Treat the building with care; the estate ownership is a privilege not a right.

Getting there

From the Spittal of Glenmuick visitor centre, follow the landrover track along the south shore of Loch Muick to the head of the loch. Six kilometres of easy track. The lodge sits a few hundred metres west of the loch shore.

Stalking season / estate access

Balmoral Estate runs red deer stalking August-October. Phone ahead for stalking-day timings before visiting.

What to expect inside

Multiple rooms — far larger than a typical bothy. Wood-panelled walls, stone fireplaces, ground-floor and upstairs sleeping space. Cleaner and better kept than most bothies — Balmoral keeps a close eye on the building.

When to visit

Open year-round but the upper Loch Muick area is exposed in winter. The Balmoral Estate may temporarily close it during stalking; check ahead.

Wildfire risk — May to October

Dry conditions increase wildfire risk during summer. Never light fires in the open. Use the bothy fireplace only, and ensure it is fully out before you leave.
