Wild Swimming

Sandwood Bay

Sandwood Bay is Scotland's most remote mainland beach — a 2km arc of pink shell-sand at the foot of Atlantic sea stacks, backed by inland lochs and accessible only after a 10km walk from Blairmore near Kinlochbervie. The John Muir Trust manages the area. Swimming here is an earned reward: the water is genuinely cold and the Atlantic swell can be powerful, but the setting — Am Buachaille sea stack, Sandwood Loch, the Cape Wrath peninsula beyond — is among the most dramatic in Europe. This is a sacred spot; no overnight camping.

Key hazards

  • strong Atlantic swell and undertow
  • cold water
  • very remote — 10km walk from nearest road
  • no shelter if weather changes

Getting there

Blairmore car park (KW14 7RJ) near Kinlochbervie. Walk 10km on a maintained but boggy path to the beach. JMT ask that you carry out all litter. No camping on the beach itself (JMT policy). SOAC rights apply throughout.

Safety

Atlantic swells create undertow even in apparently calm conditions. Do not swim beyond the shallow area near the sand. Weather can change rapidly on this exposed coast. The 10km return walk means any injury or weather deterioration requires careful planning.

Common questions

How far is the walk to Sandwood Bay?
Approximately 10km (6.2 miles) each way from the Blairmore car park. Allow 3 hours each way. The path is mostly good but can be boggy in places. A long day out — start early.
Can you camp at Sandwood Bay?
The John Muir Trust, who manage the area, ask that visitors do not camp on the beach itself in order to protect the dune system. Wild camping is permitted under SOAC elsewhere in the area.
