Achmelvich Beach
Achmelvich is one of the iconic white-sand beaches of the Northwest Highlands — a small arc of shell-sand washed by brilliantly clear turquoise water that looks more Caribbean than Scottish until you put your hand in. The sea temperature rarely exceeds 14°C but the water clarity is extraordinary. The drive from Lochinver passes through classic Sutherland quartzite landscape. The campsite above the beach is one of the simplest and most atmospheric in Scotland.

Common questions
- Why is Achmelvich water so clear and blue?
- The colour comes from the shell-sand composition (calcium carbonate), the shallow depth, and the lack of river sediment input. The water is genuinely very clear — you can read the shell-sand patterns in 2m of water on a sunny day.
