Far North Midges in September — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Noticeable at dawn and dusk. Repellent recommended. Cape Wrath, Sandwood, the Flow Country. Colder than the rest of the Highlands and breezier on the north coast, but the inland blanket bog is some of the worst midge country in Scotland on still warm days.

Current risk

Far North in September: Moderate. Noticeable at dawn and dusk. Repellent recommended.

When they bite

Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 6–9pm. First proper cold nights typically arrive in the second week, dropping ground temperatures in the Flow Country and pulling adult populations down sharply. Coast still mild but humidity dropping. Daylight back below 14 hours by month-end.

What to wear

  • Smidge repellent (75ml)
  • Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.

Tactical notes

September is the Far North's prize month. The first half typically still has residual summer warmth — sheltered inland glens, the Forsinard bog and the low-lying Sutherland Trail sections can deliver a couple of last serious midge evenings — but from the second week onwards, the population density drops off a cliff. By the last week of September, midge pressure across the entire region is light-to-negligible and you can plan trips on the basis of weather, not insects, for the first time since May.

The long walks come into their best window of the year. The full [Sutherland Trail](/long-distance/sutherland-trail) from Lochinver to Tongue is at its peak: dry firm ground, manageable daylight (still 12+ hours mid-month), spectacular Atlantic-edge sunsets, and a midge population already in steep decline. The [Cape Wrath Trail](/long-distance/cape-wrath-trail) finish from Inchnadamph onwards is similarly excellent. The bracken on Ben Loyal and Quinag turns deep orange and the Sutherland landscape gets the colour it lacks in summer.

Mountain days are at their most accessible. [Ben Hope](/hillwalking/munros/ben-hope) for the most-northerly-Munro tick, [Ben Klibreck](/hillwalking/munros/ben-klibreck-meall-nan-con), the [Ben More Assynt and Conival](/hillwalking/munros/conival) traverse, [Foinaven](/hillwalking/corbetts/foinaven-ganu-mor-foinne-bhein) and [Arkle](/hillwalking/corbetts/arkle), the long [Ben Loyal](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-loyal-an-caisteal) round — all manageable on midge pressure with head net as insurance rather than essential kit. The wild camp at [Sandwood Bay](/wild-swimming/sandwood-bay) in mid-September is one of the great nights of the Scottish year. Coast options are excellent; the [Moray Coast Trail](/long-distance/moray-coast-trail) is at its quietest. If you're planning a single Far North trip a year, September is the one.
