Low risk October Far North

Far North Midges in October — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Background pressure only. Head net optional. Cape Wrath, Sandwood, the Flow Country. Colder than the rest of the Highlands and breezier on the north coast, but the inland blanket bog is some of the worst midge country in Scotland on still warm days.

Current risk

Far North in October: Low. Background pressure only. Head net optional.

When they bite

Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 5–7pm. Cold air now consistently across the region. First snows possible on the higher Sutherland Corbetts by month-end. Adult midge activity essentially over; only freakishly warm calm days might trigger isolated residual activity in the lowest sheltered spots.

What to wear

  • Smidge repellent (75ml)
  • Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.

Tactical notes

October in the Far North is post-season for midges and the start of the autumn weather game. The first half delivers stunning colour across the Sutherland bracken slopes — Ben Loyal in low-angle October light is one of the visual peaks of the Scottish year — and the midge population is essentially gone everywhere except possibly the warmest lowest sheltered bog flats on a freakish calm warm afternoon. By mid-October the season is over across the entire region.

This is one of the best months for the isolated Far North Corbetts. [Foinaven](/hillwalking/corbetts/foinaven-ganu-mor-foinne-bhein) and [Arkle](/hillwalking/corbetts/arkle) in low autumn light give the kind of summit views that explain why people drive eight hours from Glasgow to walk these particular hills. [Cranstackie](/hillwalking/corbetts/cranstackie) and [Beinn Spionnaidh](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-spionnaidh) above Durness, [Meall Horn](/hillwalking/corbetts/meall-horn) above Loch Stack, [Ben Hee](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-hee) and [Beinn Leoid](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-leoid) on the Reay Forest boundary — all underrated objectives that share the same Far North quality of standing alone above an emptied landscape with no significant company in any direction.

The coast is excellent. [Sandwood Bay](/wild-swimming/sandwood-bay) in October Atlantic light, the headland walks at Stoer, Strathy and Dunnet, the [Black Isle](/walks-near/inverness) coastal paths — all at their best in low sun with the visitor density gone. The wild swimming windows are increasingly cold-water territory but the spots themselves are free of any insect tax. Kit list for October: head net at the bottom of the pack as insurance, repellent unnecessary, focus the weight budget on warm layers and proper rain gear.
