Our take
Kirroughtree is arguably the best trail centre in Scotland if you judge on pure trail quality rather than trail volume. The red is a genuinely world-class flowing route across natural granite. The black is spicy without being pointless. The cafe does a proper breakfast.
Insider tips
The Black Craigs red is the headline attraction — save it for last. The McMoab rock slab section is where everyone stops for photos. Be ready for the weather to come in off the coast fast.
Accommodation
Newton Stewart has hotels and B&Bs. The Glentrool bunkhouse is a 20min drive for group stays.
Food
The on-site Break Pad cafe is excellent. Strong tea, decent cakes.
