Mountain Biking
Mountain Biking in Perthshire
Comrie Croft, Dunkeld and the central Highlands trail network
Overview
Perthshire has a cluster of trail centres with different characters. Comrie Croft is an independent eco-hostel and trail centre with excellent blue and red trails and a strong community ethos. Dunkeld/Craigvinean in Forestry Scotland land has good red trails in a beautiful river setting. Kinnoull Hill gives easy access from Perth city.
Comrie Croft is one of Scotland's most appealing MTB destinations for a weekend stay — the combination of on-site hostel camping, good trails and the Perthshire landscape makes for a proper MTB holiday. The trails are not the most technical in Scotland, but the blue and red circuits are genuinely good and the setting in Strath Earn is excellent. Dunkeld is worth a separate visit for the Craigvinean trails and the town itself is one of Perthshire's finest.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I stay at Comrie Croft for an MTB trip?
- Yes — Comrie Croft (comriecroft.com) has eco-hostel accommodation, camping, and self-catering options. It is designed as an MTB destination with bike storage, a café and bike hire on-site. Booking ahead is recommended in summer as the accommodation is popular.
- What is the best Perthshire MTB trail for intermediate riders?
- Comrie Croft's red circuit is the best-rounded intermediate option in Perthshire — well-built, progressively graded and varied in character. Craigvinean near Dunkeld is slightly more natural and technical in places, which some riders prefer. Both are worth visiting on a Perthshire MTB weekend.
- Are the Perthshire MTB trails crowded?
- Perthshire trails are notably quieter than the Tweed Valley at weekends. Comrie Croft has a reasonable following but the car park rarely overflows. Craigvinean is quieter still. This makes Perthshire a good option for riders who want quality trails without the weekend crowds of more famous venues.
- Can I combine Perthshire MTB with hillwalking?
- Yes — the Perthshire glens give excellent hillwalking from Crieff (Comrie Croft's base) and Dunkeld. Ben Vorlich above Loch Earn is 30 minutes from Comrie Croft. Many riders do a riding day and a hill day on a Perthshire weekend. The local roads are also excellent for road cycling.
