Mountain Biking in Cairngorms

High-altitude trail riding in Scotland's largest national park

Overview

The Cairngorms area offers trail centre riding at Laggan Wolftrax, Glenlivet and Rothiemurchus, plus extensive natural trails on the plateau itself. Laggan Wolftrax has some of the best-built trail surfaces in Scotland and a strong progressive route structure. Glenlivet's grouse moor setting is unique. Combined with the landscape and bothies, the area suits multi-day riding trips.

Our take

The Cairngorms is Scotland's most complete mountain biking landscape — trail centres, natural singletrack, bothy routes and some of the most dramatic scenery in the country. Laggan Wolftrax stands out for the quality of its build — smooth, consistent surfaces that reward clean riding rather than brute force. The area suits riders who want to combine proper trail riding with exploration of the wider national park on and off-bike.

Wolf Run (Laggan Wolftrax)

black

Laggan's signature black circuit — technically demanding singletrack with rock gardens, steep sections and the characteristic smooth Wolftrax trail surface that rewards precision over aggression. One of the best-built black trails in Highland Scotland.

Glenlivet Red

red

Moorland singletrack in a unique Speyside setting — purpose-built trail on open grouse moor above the Glenlivet Estate. The setting feels genuinely remote and the trail has a natural character that differs from the forest-based venues.

Rothiemurchus Forest Trails

blue

Natural trail riding through ancient Caledonian pine forest on the Rothiemurchus Estate — the green and blue marked routes give beautiful forest riding with the backdrop of Caledonian pines and the Cairngorm peaks. Free to access from Aviemore.

Frequently asked questions

Is Laggan Wolftrax worth the drive from Edinburgh?
Yes — Laggan Wolftrax (165km from Edinburgh, approximately 1h45) is among the best-built trail centres in Scotland. The trail surface quality is exceptional and the black circuit is genuinely technical. Most riders find a day trip worthwhile; combining with an overnight in Newtonmore or Aviemore makes it more relaxed.
Can I mountain bike in the Cairngorms National Park on natural trails?
Yes — the Cairngorms has extensive natural singletrack and access roads open to bikes under Scottish access rights. The Lairig Ghru, Gleann Einich, Glen Feshie and Ryvoan Pass all have rideable natural trails. These routes are more demanding navigation and terrain-wise than trail centres — carry tools, maps and be prepared for variable conditions.
What is riding like in the Cairngorms in winter?
The Cairngorm trail centres (Laggan, Rothiemurchus) are rideable year-round in normal winter weather. Snow typically closes high natural trails from November to April. The Rothiemurchus forest trails can be excellent in dry winter weather. Mud and ice are the main concerns rather than snow at trail centre level.
Is there accommodation near Laggan Wolftrax?
Yes — Laggan village has a small café and the trail centre itself. Newtonmore (8km north) and Kingussie (15km north) have good accommodation including B&Bs and a hostel. Aviemore (30km north-east) has the widest range of hotels, hostels and holiday rentals.
