A roadside village that exists because of the A82 and the railway, with two stations for a population you could fit in a bus. Walkers arrive here having left Loch Lomond behind and stayed with an eye on tomorrow, because the next day is the long one.
The standard fourth night on the 7-day schedule, and a common stop on every other schedule too.
What is actually in Tyndrum
The By The Way hostel, hotels, the Green Welly Stop and a campsite. Genuinely more choice than anywhere since Drymen, which is why it absorbs so much of the route.
How far ahead to book
Three months in high season. Better supplied than its neighbours, but it is also where people retreat to when Bridge of Orchy and Kingshouse are gone.
When it is full
Crianlarich is 8km back with a station; Bridge of Orchy is 11km on. Both are realistic, which makes this one of the few stops where being full is an inconvenience rather than a problem.
Getting there, and getting out
On the West Highland Line, and on the A82 bus route. Easy to reach and easy to leave — the second-best bail-out point after Crianlarich.
Camping
Outside the permit zones, with a campsite in the village. This is the last place to make that decision comfortably before the moor.
Food and resupply
**The most important resupply on the route.** Tomorrow is 30km across Rannoch Moor with nothing on it. Buy food here as though the next shop is a day and a half away, because it is.
