A sailing and beach village with a harbour, a chain walk along the cliffs and a summer population several times its winter one. From here to Crail the coast turns into a string of fishing villages, and the accommodation problem changes with it.
Not a stage end on the 8-day schedule, and the point at which the path becomes the walk people actually come for.
What is actually in Elie
B&Bs, small hotels and holiday lets — much of the stock is self-catering aimed at week-long visitors rather than at walkers passing through.
How far ahead to book
Four to six months for June to August. The East Neuk is a holiday destination in its own right and you are booking against people staying a week, not a night.
When it is full
St Monans is 5km on and Anstruther 12km. The villages are close enough together that a full one is an inconvenience rather than a problem — which is the East Neuk's one real advantage.
Getting there, and getting out
No railway anywhere in the East Neuk. Buses run the coast road between Leven and St Andrews and are the only public transport — a real change from the western half, where every stop had a station.
Camping
Access code applies, but this is farmland, golf links and village. Legal pitches are scarce and conspicuous.
Food and resupply
A shop and pubs. Fine for a top-up, not a full resupply.
