The biggest of the East Neuk villages and the one with a genuine tourist economy: a harbour, the fisheries museum, boats to the Isle of May and a chip shop with a queue down the street. The route record calls the Anstruther Fish Bar essential and it is not wrong.
The fourth night on the standard 8-day schedule, and the busiest stop between Kirkcaldy and St Andrews.
What is actually in Anstruther
B&Bs and hotels — the deepest supply in the East Neuk, which is why the schedule ends a stage here.
How far ahead to book
Four to six months for June to August. Better supplied than its neighbours and correspondingly more contested: it takes the stage-end walkers plus everyone who could not get into the smaller villages.
When it is full
Crail is 7km on and Pittenweem 2km back — both real options and both smaller. St Andrews is 24km, which is a full extra stage rather than a fallback.
Getting there, and getting out
No railway. Coast-road buses to Leven and St Andrews, reasonably frequent in summer and thinner in winter.
Camping
Access code applies. The coast either side is farmland and cliff path; a legal pitch means getting inland.
Food and resupply
Shops, cafés and the harbour. The best resupply in the East Neuk.
