Marilyn · Galloway

Cairnharrow

A 456m hill in Galloway in the far southwest with at least 150m of prominence — enough to feel like a real summit rather than a shoulder. The modest height belies the quality of the walking.

Standard route

A steady ascent through the Galloway Forest Park or open moorland to the 456m summit. The walking is straightforward with clear views opening up as you gain height. Allow 2-4 hours.

Terrain

Forestry tracks and open moorland. The Galloway hills can be surprisingly boggy despite the gentle appearance.

In winter

Galloway winters are mild, influenced by the Gulf Stream. Snow is rare below 500m. These are among the most accessible winter hills in Scotland.
