North-West Highlands Midges in July — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Swarms likely. Consider relocating to coast, altitude or breezy ground. Torridon to Assynt — heavily forested glens, low pressure on exposed coast and ridges, brutal in sheltered hollows. The combination of latitude and Atlantic humidity gives the densest swarms outside Lochaber proper.
Current risk
North-West Highlands in July: Severe. Swarms likely. Consider relocating to coast, altitude or breezy ground.
When they bite
Peak biting windows are dawn 5–8am and dusk 7–10pm. Warmest and most humid month. Long daylight, frequent calm overcast evenings, very high humidity in sheltered glens and post-rain. Population now at second-generation peak — the conditions that breed midges and the conditions that make them fly are both maximised.
What to wear
- Smidge repellent (75ml)
- LifeSystems head net
- Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.
Tactical notes
July is peak season on the west coast and the North-West Highlands gets the full force of it. The Torridonian sandstone glens, the Fisherfield bog country, the Wester Ross sea-lochs and the lower valleys around Ullapool and Lochinver are all at maximum pressure. The calm humid evening after a July shower is the worst hour of the Scottish outdoor calendar in this region — anywhere south of about 600m, sheltered from the wind and below the inversion layer is genuinely hostile to bare skin.
The corollary is that the high mountain days are still excellent. The [An Teallach](/hillwalking/munros/an-teallach-sgurr-fiona) pinnacle traverse, the [Liathach](/hillwalking/munros/liathach-mullach-an-rathain) ridge, the long round of [Beinn Eighe](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-eighe-ruadh-stac-mor) and the Beinn Alligin horseshoe all keep you above the active midge layer for the productive part of the day. The trick is timing the descent. Aim to be off the ridge and into the car by 6pm — the dusk biting window on the [Glen Torridon](/glens/glen-torridon) valley floor between 7pm and 10pm is the brutal end of the equation.
Bothies in July need genuine commitment. [Carnmore](/bothies/carnmore) and [Meanach](/bothies/meanach-fisherfield) deep in Fisherfield are 4-5 hour walk-ins through prime midge bog country, and the bothy itself is a sheltered low-altitude box that fills with insects the moment the door opens after dark. Coastal options [Suileag](/bothies/suileag) and [Schoolhouse Inver](/bothies/schoolhouse-inver) get more sea breeze and are usually slightly more tolerable. The wild swimming spots are the bright side — [Corrieshalloch Gorge](/wild-swimming/corrieshalloch-gorge-pool) at midday in a breeze is a perfect July hour, and [Sandwood Bay](/wild-swimming/sandwood-bay) on a sunny afternoon usually catches enough wind to be liveable. Avoid the [Cape Wrath Trail](/long-distance/cape-wrath-trail) attempts in July — north-bound walkers crossing Fisherfield in calm weather will have one of the worst weeks of their lives.
