Low risk October North-West Highlands

North-West Highlands Midges in October — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Background pressure only. Head net optional. Torridon to Assynt — heavily forested glens, low pressure on exposed coast and ridges, brutal in sheltered hollows. The combination of latitude and Atlantic humidity gives the densest swarms outside Lochaber proper.

Current risk

North-West Highlands in October: Low. Background pressure only. Head net optional.

When they bite

Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 5–7pm. Cold air now consistently across the region. Coastal Wester Ross still managing low double-digit afternoons but the inland valleys cooling fast. Most of the midge population already dormant; isolated late activity possible in a freakishly warm calm spell.

What to wear

  • Smidge repellent (75ml)
  • Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.

Tactical notes

October in the North-West Highlands is functionally the end of midge season. The first half of the month occasionally delivers a warm calm afternoon that wakes up the residual population in the lowest sheltered spots — Loch Maree shoreline, the bog flats around [Carnmore bothy](/bothies/carnmore), the river meadows on the Cape Wrath Trail approach — but these events are rare and short-lived. By the second half, ground temperatures are below the threshold across the entire region and adult flight activity is effectively over.

This is one of the best months of the year for the region. The colour change is at its peak across [Glen Affric](/glens/glen-affric), [Glen Torridon](/glens/glen-torridon) and the [Strath Glass](/glens/glen-strathfarrar) bracken slopes. The first snow typically dusts the summit ridges of [Liathach](/hillwalking/munros/liathach-mullach-an-rathain), [Beinn Eighe](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-eighe-ruadh-stac-mor) and [An Teallach](/hillwalking/munros/an-teallach-sgurr-fiona) by mid-month. Daylight is still 10 hours, dropping to 8 by month-end — short but workable.

Kit list for October trips: head net in the bottom of the pack as insurance only, no repellent needed for most days. The wild swimming spots transition to cold-water territory — [Corrieshalloch Gorge](/wild-swimming/corrieshalloch-gorge-pool) and [Sandwood Bay](/wild-swimming/sandwood-bay) are both excellent in October but the air temperature and the spring water mean a proper changing routine matters. Bothy nights at [Suileag](/bothies/suileag), [Strabeg](/bothies/strabeg) and [Schoolhouse Inver](/bothies/schoolhouse-inver) are free of biting pressure and the visitor density drops sharply after the schools return. October in the North-West Highlands is the connoisseur's window — quiet, colourful, and midge-free in everything but the most freakish weather window.
