Loch Lomond & The Trossachs Midges in December — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. The first proper midge country going north from Glasgow. Loch Lomondside, the Trossachs lochs and the Arrochar Alps all hold strong populations. The east shore at evening in July is a textbook case of why head nets exist.

Tactical notes
December in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs is full winter, with the most committed weather, the shortest daylight, and the deepest cold of the year. The midge population is fully dormant across the entire region and won't be a planning consideration again until the following May. Head net stays out of the kit list entirely.
The Arrochar Alps in winter conditions are some of the most accessible serious winter Munros in Scotland — reachable by train from Glasgow Queen Street to Arrochar & Tarbet in under 90 minutes, with the [Cobbler](/hillwalking/corbetts/the-cobbler) and Munro cluster ([Beinn Ime](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-ime), [Beinn Narnain](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-narnain), [Ben Vane](/hillwalking/munros/ben-vane), [Ben Vorlich](/hillwalking/munros/ben-vorlich-arrochar-trossachs)) all giving short approaches with serious summit conditions. The Crianlarich Munros — [Ben More](/hillwalking/munros/ben-more-arrochar-trossachs) and [Stob Binnein](/hillwalking/munros/stob-binnein), [Cruach Ardrain](/hillwalking/munros/cruach-ardrain), [Ben Lui](/hillwalking/munros/ben-lui-beinn-laoigh), [Ben Oss](/hillwalking/munros/ben-oss), [Beinn Dubhchraig](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-dubhchraig) — similarly accessible by train.
[Ben Lomond](/hillwalking/munros/ben-lomond) in winter conditions is a serious mountain — the south face from Rowardennan is exposed and can hold significant cornice on the summit ridge in the wrong wind. The Trossachs viewpoint hills are at their most atmospheric: [Ben Venue](/hillwalking/grahams/ben-venue) above Loch Katrine on a December morning with low cloud and snow patches is the canonical Trossachs scene. [Ben Ledi](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-ledi) above Callander gives an easier short winter day. The Loch Lomond camping zones are unregulated through December but the lochside pitching is heavy-water and uninviting; most December visitors are day-trippers or pub-night walkers. Daylight under 7 hours; weather windows tight; insect tax zero.
