Loch Lomond & The Trossachs Midges in October — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Background pressure only. Head net optional. The first proper midge country going north from Glasgow. Loch Lomondside, the Trossachs lochs and the Arrochar Alps all hold strong populations. The east shore at evening in July is a textbook case of why head nets exist.
Current risk
Loch Lomond & The Trossachs in October: Low. Background pressure only. Head net optional.
When they bite
Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 5–7pm. Cool air consistent. Adult midge activity essentially over. Bracken colour at annual peak across Trossachs woodland and the Arrochar ridges. First proper autumn storms arriving.
What to wear
- Smidge repellent (75ml)
- Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.
Tactical notes
October in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs is post-midge-season and the prime visual month of the year. The midge population is essentially gone except in the warmest sheltered woodland on a freak warm calm afternoon. The bracken colour on the Trossachs hills around [Ben Venue](/hillwalking/grahams/ben-venue), [Ben Ledi](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-ledi) and Ben A'an, the autumn colour on the Loch Ard birch and the Aberfoyle Forest, and the low-angle October light across Loch Lomond from Conic Hill — all at their annual peak.
For hill days, the Arrochar Alps Munros are at their best of the year on midge grounds (zero) with the trade-off of more committed weather. [The Cobbler](/hillwalking/corbetts/the-cobbler) in October light is one of the great Scottish autumn photographs. [Beinn Ime](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-ime), [Beinn Narnain](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-narnain), [Ben Vane](/hillwalking/munros/ben-vane), [Ben Vorlich](/hillwalking/munros/ben-vorlich-arrochar-trossachs) give a cluster of long October days. The Crianlarich Munro cluster — [Ben More](/hillwalking/munros/ben-more-arrochar-trossachs), [Stob Binnein](/hillwalking/munros/stob-binnein), [Cruach Ardrain](/hillwalking/munros/cruach-ardrain), [Ben Lui](/hillwalking/munros/ben-lui-beinn-laoigh) — at peak autumn condition.
The [West Highland Way](/long-distance/west-highland-way) walkers timing for October get the bracken-and-colour reward with a substantially lower-impact midge experience. The [Rob Roy Way](/long-distance/rob-roy-way) across the Trossachs to Pitlochry, the [John Muir Way](/long-distance/john-muir-way) at the southern end of the loch, and the [Three Lochs Way](/long-distance/three-lochs-way) at Helensburgh end all give clean October LDP options. [Ben Lomond](/hillwalking/munros/ben-lomond) from Rowardennan with October colour on the lochside is the standard Glasgow autumn Munro day. The wild swimming windows at Luss, Balmaha and the loch shore stay open with sea-equivalent water temperatures (12°C in Loch Lomond by mid-October). Head net at the bottom of the pack as insurance only.
