Our take

Highland Wildcat is a pilgrimage. You earn the descent with a stiff climb out of Golspie, but the payback is the longest singletrack descent in Britain, all the way to sea level. The black is the proper line. The red exists but the black is the one you've come for.

Insider tips

Do it in a day from Inverness. Pack lunch. No facilities at the top.

Far North Weekend

Balblair on day 1 as a warm-up — short and close to accommodation in Bonar Bridge. Wildcat on day 2 for the full descent to sea level. Golspie or Bonar Bridge for overnight.
