The busiest place on the route between the two ends, and the only one that is a destination in its own right: a flight of canal locks runs through the middle of the village down into Loch Ness, and the coach traffic that comes with them competes with you for beds. The 33km stage that ends here is the route's longest.

What is actually in Fort Augustus
Hotels, hostels, B&Bs and a campsite — the widest choice anywhere on the Way outside Inverness.
How far ahead to book
Four to six months for June to August, and earlier than that feels prudent. More beds than anywhere else on the route, and more competition for them: this is a coach stop and a Loch Ness base as well as a trail village.
When it is full
Invermoriston is 12km on, which is a short and pleasant extra push, and has far fewer beds. Realistically the better fallback is to take the A82 bus in either direction and come back to the trail in the morning.
Getting there, and getting out
No railway. On the A82 bus route between Fort William and Inverness, with a reasonable service — a straightforward bail-out point despite the lack of a station.
Camping
Access code camping applies, and there is a campsite in the village. The land immediately around Fort Augustus is developed, so a wild pitch means getting clear of it first.
Food and resupply
Shops, cafés and pubs. A full resupply and the best one on the route between the ends.
