A real village on the A82 with a railway station, a few miles from where the Way actually runs. The Commando Memorial above it looks the length of the glen to Ben Nevis. Everything Gairlochy has not got — shops, buses, trains and beds — is here.
Not a stage end, and used more than the stage end is — it is where walkers go when Gairlochy is full, and where many choose to stay regardless.
What is actually in Spean Bridge
Hotels, B&Bs and guest houses aimed at road and rail travellers as well as walkers, so the supply is deeper and less seasonal than the trail villages either side.
How far ahead to book
A month or two outside July and August. This is the release valve for the southern Great Glen and it is worth knowing before you need it.
When it is full
Fort William is 15km back down the road with far more beds and the same railway line.
Getting there, and getting out
On the West Highland Line, and on the A82 bus route between Fort William and Inverness. The best transport point on the southern half of the Way.
Camping
Outside any permit zone; access code camping applies. The ground opens out north of the village.
Food and resupply
Shops and food. The last proper resupply before Fort Augustus, which is 33km on.
