A university and golf town where a coastal walker is far from the main event. That is the whole booking problem: beds here are priced and filled by golf, by term dates and by graduation weeks, none of which have anything to do with the path.
The fifth night on the 8-day schedule, and where a great many people simply stop walking.
What is actually in St Andrews
Hotels, B&Bs, guest houses and university rooms released in summer. Plenty of stock, and plenty of competition for it.
How far ahead to book
Six months for June to September, and check the golf calendar before you fix your dates. This is the one stop on the Fife Coastal Path where an event you have never heard of can take every room in town.
When it is full
Leuchars is 10km on and has a station. Dundee is a short train ride over the Tay and has far more beds. Both are more sensible than paying a championship-week rate for a night on a walk.
Getting there, and getting out
No station in the town itself — Leuchars, 10km away, is the railhead, with a frequent bus link. Buses also run down the East Neuk coast and north to Dundee.
Camping
Access code applies; the town and its golf links occupy the coast, so pitches mean getting well clear.
Food and resupply
Full supermarkets and outdoor shops. The best resupply on the route after Kirkcaldy.
