Winter weekend in the Cairngorms for beginners
Two days of low-commitment winter walking + a Glenmore Lodge winter skills taster — the right way to start winter hillwalking in Scotland.
Scottish winter walking is the highest-risk season for hillwalker injury and death. Most accidents happen in the first season — walkers in summer kit on snow, falling on iced rock, getting cragfast, or being caught by a sudden whiteout. This three-day weekend is the standard "how to start safely" plan: a low-commitment introduction day, a Glenmore Lodge winter skills taster on day two, and a short safe winter hill on day three with the skills fresh.
The Cairngorms is the best place in Scotland for this — the highest reliable winter snow, the best instructor base at Glenmore Lodge, easy public transport access, and a network of low-commitment walks. Bring the /kit/winter-munro list as a minimum; the course provides ice axe, crampons and avalanche kit for the day.
Day-by-day plan
