Winter weekend in the Cairngorms for beginners

Two days of low-commitment winter walking + a Glenmore Lodge winter skills taster — the right way to start winter hillwalking in Scotland.

3 days moderate Best: Jan, Feb, Mar £400-£700 per person inc. course Car-free realistic AviemoreAviemore

Scottish winter walking is the highest-risk season for hillwalker injury and death. Most accidents happen in the first season — walkers in summer kit on snow, falling on iced rock, getting cragfast, or being caught by a sudden whiteout. This three-day weekend is the standard "how to start safely" plan: a low-commitment introduction day, a Glenmore Lodge winter skills taster on day two, and a short safe winter hill on day three with the skills fresh.

The Cairngorms is the best place in Scotland for this — the highest reliable winter snow, the best instructor base at Glenmore Lodge, easy public transport access, and a network of low-commitment walks. Bring the /kit/winter-munro list as a minimum; the course provides ice axe, crampons and avalanche kit for the day.

Day-by-day plan

1

Aviemore arrival + Meall a' Bhuachaille

Train from Edinburgh/Glasgow to Aviemore. Bus to Glenmore. Walk the Meall a' Bhuachaille loop (810m, 7-8km) — the standard Cairngorms first winter hill with the lowest commitment. Excellent views of the Northern Corries when the weather holds.

Distance
7-8 km, 500m ascent
Overnight
Glenmore Lodge bunkhouse or Aviemore B&B
Transport
Train to Aviemore, bus to Glenmore
2

Glenmore Lodge winter skills day

Spend the day with a Glenmore Lodge instructor. Self-arrest with the ice axe, crampon technique, snow assessment, avalanche awareness, route choice. The day generally runs in the Northern Corries. Hire kit at the lodge.

Distance
Variable — typically 8 km with deliberate skill stops
Overnight
Glenmore Lodge bunkhouse
Transport
Course transport from the lodge
3

Cairn Gorm in winter — your first winter Munro

Use yesterday's skills on a low-commitment Munro. Cairn Gorm (1245m) from the ski centre via the Windy Ridge is the right first winter Munro — well-defined, popular, with easy escape. 4-5 hours return.

Distance
8 km, 600m ascent
Overnight
Train home from Aviemore

Winter weekend in the Cairngorms for beginners — common questions

Do I need to own ice axe and crampons?
Not for this weekend — Glenmore Lodge provides kit for the course day. After the course, if you continue winter walking, buy your own. See /kit/winter-munro for the list. B2 boots, 12-point crampons, walking ice axe.
What if the weather is bad?
The course runs in most conditions — including poor weather is part of the point. For day 3, Cairn Gorm is a fair-weather choice; if conditions are bad, substitute with the lower Meall a' Bhuachaille or rest day in Aviemore.
Is this enough to attempt Ben Nevis in winter?
No. This is an introduction. Ben Nevis in winter requires 5-10 winter hill days and ideally a guided introductory winter Ben Nevis trip. Build up gradually over a season.
