Carnan

Carnan is the highest point of Vatersay, the small inhabited island just south of Barra, reached by causeway across the narrow sound. The NL 553 grid square sits among machair, shell-sand beaches and gneiss knolls, and the 273m summit feels considerably airier than its modest height suggests.

From the causeway road or the village near Caolas, head south-east across rough croft land and heather knolls to gain the broad summit ridge. Sea views open in every direction across Vatersay Bay, Sandray and the Mingulay group. Allow 2-3 hours for the round trip.

Terrain

Gneiss bedrock breaks through heather and peaty grass on the climb, with patches of bog in the hollows between knolls. There is no continuous path so route-finding follows the line of least resistance up rocky steps.

In winter

Pure Atlantic exposure means winter visits are dictated by ferry reliability and wind speed rather than snow. Brief snow showers are scoured off by gales, but daylight is short and ferry cancellations common from December to February.
