Weather & conditions
Often delivers Scotland's most stable weather. Clear, crisp days with excellent visibility. Autumn colours begin in the birch glens. Morning frosts return at altitude. The deer stag rut begins — an extraordinary wildlife spectacle. Days are still long enough for big routes.
Midges are effectively gone by mid-September. The first frosts kill them off. Head net no longer needed for most locations.
Our take on September
September is the month that experienced Scottish hillwalkers hoard. The midges are dead. The tourists have gone home. The autumn colours are beginning. The light is golden. The deer are rutting on the hillsides. And the weather, more often than not, is settled and clear. If you walk one month in Scotland, make it September.
Best activities
- Hillwalking — best month overall
- Wild camping — no midges, autumn colours
- Long-distance walking
- Photography — golden light, red deer rut
- Mountain biking — dry trails, autumn colours
Hillwalking
The consensus best month for hillwalking in Scotland. Midges gone, crowds gone, 12+ hours of daylight, stable weather patterns, and the first autumn colours in the birch and rowan. The deer rut means stags are visible on the hills — spectacular but maintain distance. Stalking is active — check estate access.
Mountain biking
Trails are in excellent condition — dry after summer, not yet churned by autumn rain. Autumn colours in the Tweed Valley and Highlands make every ride scenic. The air is crisp and cool — ideal riding temperature.
Wild camping
The finest wild camping of the year. No midges, comfortable temperatures, stunning sunsets, and autumn colours beginning in the glens. A 3-season sleeping bag is sufficient. The equinox delivers 12 hours of daylight.
Sea kayaking
Sea temperatures still 12–14°C. Autumn swells begin but calm spells offer excellent paddling. Seal pups on the west coast. Some of the best visibility of the year for coastal scenery.
Gear highlights
- 3-season sleeping bag — nights cooling
- Warm hat and gloves for summits
- Head torch — sunsets before 7pm by late month
