River Etive — Glencoe Gorge

The River Etive carves a dramatic gorge through the floor of Glen Etive — a valley road off the A82 Glencoe road that feels almost unvisited compared with its famous neighbour. Pools of clear, fast-flowing water fill natural rock basins surrounded by heather and birch, with the Glencoe ridge visible at the head of the glen. The Jamie and Skyfall Bond films both used this location. Swimming here is about reading the water — some pools are safe even in moderate spate, others change character completely with rain.

Common questions

Was James Bond filmed in Glen Etive?
Yes — the opening scene of Skyfall (2012) and later a long drive sequence were filmed in Glen Etive. The valley is visually spectacular and largely unchanged.
When is it safe to swim in the River Etive?
In settled dry spells from July–August. Check SEPA River Levels before going. After heavy rain the gorge pools become fast and dangerous. Clear, low water is the green light.
