Wild Swimming
Loch Coruisk
Loch Coruisk is arguably Scotland's most dramatic swim location — a dark freshwater loch ringed by the Black Cuillin at the closest point to sea level. The water flows directly from the mountain streams that pour off the jagged gabbro ridges above, staying genuinely cold even in August. The journey in sets the tone: a 45-minute boat trip from Elgol, or a 6km approach over the Bad Step coastal route. Swimmers willing to work for it will find a scene unlike anything else in Scotland.

Getting there

Safety
Very cold year-round. Weather changes rapidly in the Cuillin — even in summer. The boat landing on slippery rock slabs requires care. No mobile signal at the loch. Midges are ferocious on calm days — bring good repellent.

Common questions
- How do you get to Loch Coruisk?
- By boat from Elgol (Bella Jane or Aquaxplore, book in advance), or on foot via the coastal Bad Step route from Kilmarie — a 3-hour each-way walk with a short scramble. The boat trip takes about 45 minutes each way.
- Is swimming in Loch Coruisk safe?
- With preparation, yes. The main risks are cold water (7–13°C), remote location, and fast-changing weather from the Cuillin. Wear a wetsuit, tow float, and don't go alone.
