From the car park
The car park is directly off the A71 between Darvel and Strathaven and is signposted. From it, a small metal gate through a gap in the hedge opens straight onto the view of the hill, with the Spirit of Scotland monument a minute away — a cast of Wallace’s silhouette by Richard Price, erected in 2004, carrying words from Blind Harry’s poem "Wallace". Wallace fought here in 1297 and Bruce in 1307.
The walk
Short and steeper than it looks: about 0.6 miles from the car park to the top. There is no distinct path, the ground is frequently muddy, and the south side of the hill is craggy — this is a walk that rewards going up the way you can see and coming down the same way, rather than contouring round into the crags. The reward for twenty minutes of effort is a view over the whole Irvine valley.
Busy times
Weekend afternoons in summer, when the monument brings people who are not going up the hill. It is rarely crowded on the hill itself.
Getting here without a car
Buses run along the A71 between Kilmarnock, Darvel and Strathaven and pass close by; check Traveline Scotland for the current service and stop, and expect a short walk on a fast road with no pavement.
Winter access
The A71 is a main road and is gritted. The hill itself is grass and mud on a steep slope with crags on one side, so it is greasy rather than technical in the wet and genuinely slippery when frozen. It is a fine short winter outing in the right boots.
Overflow parking
None. It is a small car park on a fast A-road, which is a poor combination for parking on the verge — if it is full, the sensible move is to come back rather than to squeeze in.
