When they bite
Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 5–7pm. Cool air consistent. Adult midge activity essentially over by mid-month. Bracken and birch colour at annual peak across the Perthshire glens. First proper autumn storms arriving.
What to wear
- Smidge repellent (75ml)
- Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.
Tactical notes
October in Perthshire is post-midge-season and the visual peak of the Big Tree Country year. The midge population is essentially gone except in the warmest sheltered woodland on a freak warm calm afternoon. The bracken and birch colour through [Glen Lyon](/glens/glen-lyon), the autumn shades along the River Tay and the River Tummel, the larch turning gold across the Tay Forest Park, the famous yews and pines of Big Tree Country — all at their annual peak.
This is the visual peak for the long Perthshire routes. The Birks of Aberfeldy and the Hermitage at Dunkeld are the standard short-walk October highlights.
For hill days, the Ben Lawers range is at its best of the year on midge grounds (zero) with the trade-off of more committed weather. The seven-Munro full traverse with bracken-and-snow contrast on the Lawers slopes is exceptional. [Schiehallion](/hillwalking/munros/schiehallion) in October low-angle light, [Beinn a' Ghlo](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-a-ghlo-braigh-coire-chruinn-bhalgain) the three-Munro Atholl round, the Carn Mairg circuit above Glen Lyon — all at their finest. [Ben Vrackie](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-vrackie) and [Ben Chonzie](/hillwalking/munros/ben-chonzie) give short clean half-days. The Bridge of Orchy Munro cluster ([Beinn Dorain](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-dorain), [Beinn an Dothaidh](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-an-dothaidh), [Beinn Achaladair](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-achaladair), [Beinn a' Chreachain](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-a-chreachain)) is at peak condition. The [Allt Scheicheachan](/bothies/allt-scheicheachan), [Camusericht](/bothies/camusericht) and [Alder Bay](/bothies/alder-bay) bothies are open, quiet, and entirely free of insects. Head net at the bottom of the pack as insurance only.
