Outer Hebrides Midges in February — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. The wind is your friend. Lewis, Harris and the Uists are routinely breezy enough to ground the midges entirely, even in July. The exceptions are sheltered bays, machair edges and the rare flat-calm summer evening — then they appear.
Current risk
Outer Hebrides in February: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.
When they bite
Out of season — no significant biting activity in Outer Hebrides this month. Coldest air of the year inland; coast slightly milder thanks to surrounding sea. Atlantic gales remain frequent. Snow lie possible on the Harris hills. Adult midge population zero.
What to wear
No specific kit needed for midges in Outer Hebrides this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.
Tactical notes
February is statistically the coldest month in the Outer Hebrides, but "coldest" here means coastal lows around 1°C rather than the deep inland Cairngorm freeze of the mainland. The midge population remains in winter dormancy and won't reappear until at least May; the planning consideration is once again entirely weather.
This is one of the best months of the year for the long Harris hill days. [An Cliseam (Clisham)](/hillwalking/corbetts/an-cliseam-clisham), the highest hill in the Outer Hebrides, gives a serious winter day in good conditions — open Atlantic exposure means the summit can be in full gale while the road below is in sun. The North Harris hills — [Sgaoth Aird](/hillwalking/marilyns/sgaoth-aird), [Stulabhal](/hillwalking/marilyns/stulabhal-stulaval), [Todun](/hillwalking/marilyns/todun-toddun), [Bleabhal](/hillwalking/marilyns/bleabhal-bleaval) — give clusters of rough Marilyn days reached from the Tarbert/Hushinish road. South Harris and the Uists are gentler ground: [Roineabhal](/hillwalking/marilyns/roineabhal-roneval) above Rodel, [Eabhal](/hillwalking/marilyns/eabhal-eaval) on North Uist, [Beinn Mhor](/hillwalking/marilyns/beinn-mhor-nf898761) the highest hill on South Uist.
Barra and Vatersay at the south end of the chain feel like a different sub-region in February — slightly milder, slightly less storm-exposed, and [Heabhal (Sheabhal)](/hillwalking/marilyns/heabhal-sheabhal-heaval) above Castlebay gives a short windy day with the whole island laid out beneath. No insect activity anywhere. Build the pack around wind, rain, and ferry uncertainty; head net stays buried.
