Ardnamurchan Peninsula

Ardnamurchan Point is the westernmost point of mainland Britain — facing an unobstructed Atlantic horizon for 3,000km to Newfoundland. The peninsula's remoteness (a 45-minute single-track drive from Salen) and the total absence of industrial light pollution to the west and north create Bortle 2 conditions accessible by road from Fort William. The automated lighthouse at Ardnamurchan Point, Scotland's most powerful lighthouse (completed 1849), provides a classic foreground for aurora and Milky Way photography. The peninsula is also one of Scotland's best sunsets locations, giving early-evening composition while waiting for dark.

Getting there

B8007 single-track road west from Salen on Ardnamurchan. Ardnamurchan Point car park (PH36 4LN) at the lighthouse — free. The lighthouse visitor centre (seasonal) operates daytime only; the exterior is freely accessible at night. SOAC rights apply throughout. Kilchoan village (10km east of the point) has a hotel, shop and campsite.

Postcode: PH36 4LN

Photography notes

The lighthouse occupies a headland with 270° sea horizon. Position north of the lighthouse for aurora compositions; south-facing for Milky Way arch from March to May. The light itself sweeps every 20 seconds — factor into long exposures or shoot toward open sea to avoid the backscatter.

Common questions

Is Ardnamurchan accessible in winter?
Yes, by road year-round. The B8007 is occasionally closed after heavy snow (it is not gritted beyond Glenborrodale) but this is rare. The ferry from Tobermory (Mull) to Kilchoan is seasonal and weather-dependent in winter, but the road approach from Salen is the main access route.
