John Muir Way · Overnight stop

Accommodation in North Berwick

The end of the ninth day, on the East Lothian coast with the Bass Rock offshore and North Berwick Law behind the town.

All John Muir Way overnight stops

End of day nine · Stage stop

Edinburgh's day-trip seaside town: a volcanic hill, a harbour, a tidal pool and the Scottish Seabird Centre, with the Bass Rock's gannet colony in view from the beach. The Seabird Centre and Dirleton Castle, earlier in the day, are passport stamping stations; so is the town library.

The ninth and last night before the finish on the standard schedule.

What is actually in North Berwick

Hotels, B&Bs and self-catering. It is also the most-searched stop on the route: 720 searches a month for North Berwick accommodation against 20 for the Way as a whole.

How far ahead to book

Months, not weeks, for summer weekends. It is one of Edinburgh's favourite escapes and the train is packed on sunny Saturdays; the beds go the same way.

When it is full

Edinburgh is 33 minutes by train, and Dunbar — the finish — has rooms of its own. Either is better than a long search here in July.

Getting there, and getting out

North Berwick station is five minutes from the high street and 33 minutes from Edinburgh Waverley.

Camping

Access code applies, but the coast either side is beaches, links and nature reserve, busy in summer. Not a place to plan a wild camp.

Food and resupply

Small supermarkets (Co-op, Tesco Express), cafés and an independent high street.
