John Muir Way · Overnight stop
Accommodation in Musselburgh
At the mouth of the River Esk, about five miles east of Edinburgh, where the Way leaves the city for the East Lothian coast.
Between Edinburgh and Prestonpans · Off-schedule stop
A historic coastal town and the largest settlement in East Lothian, with about 21,000 people.
Not a stage end on the official ten-section schedule, whose eighth section runs from Edinburgh to Prestonpans: the passport's stamping list puts the Prestonpans library and the Prestongrange Museum on the join between sections 8 and 9, further along the coast. Musselburgh is the nearest of this site's stop pages to that join, and a reasonable place to end the day if you would rather not go back into Edinburgh.
What is actually in Musselburgh
B&Bs, and close enough to Edinburgh that the city's supply is effectively next door.
How far ahead to book
Weeks rather than months. What fills these beds is Edinburgh's own busy weeks, not the trail.
When it is full
Edinburgh, about five miles west, and a morning return to the coast.
Getting there, and getting out
Musselburgh station is about 1km south of the town centre.
Camping
No. Town and coastal promenade.
Food and resupply
A town's shops. The last big resupply before North Berwick.
