John Muir Way · Overnight stop

Accommodation in Bo'ness

On the shore of the Firth of Forth, where the Way leaves Linlithgow and its loch for the sea before running east past Blackness Castle to Queensferry.

All John Muir Way overnight stops

Between Linlithgow and South Queensferry · Off-schedule stop

A former burgh and seaport of about 15,000 on the south bank of the Forth, 17 miles north-west of Edinburgh and about seven miles east of Falkirk. Its harbour and the Bo'ness & Kinneil heritage railway are its best-known sights, and it is the first time since Helensburgh that the Way is beside the sea.

Not a stage end on the official ten-section schedule — but the natural overnight for anyone splitting Linlithgow to Queensferry, or walking the Falkirk-to-Queensferry stretch over two days.

What is actually in Bo'ness

Hotels and B&Bs in a town of 15,000. The Corbie Inn and Blackness Castle are the passport stamping stations on this section.

How far ahead to book

Not a walking pinch point; a few weeks is normally plenty.

When it is full

Linlithgow, back inland, has more rooms. Scotland's Great Trails lists buses from Bo'ness to Falkirk, Linlithgow and Edinburgh, so a bed in any of the three is a bus ride away.

Getting there, and getting out

By bus: Scotland's Great Trails lists Bo'ness and Blackness among the places reached by bus from Falkirk, Linlithgow and Edinburgh.

Camping

Access code applies, but not in the town. Look further along the coast towards Blackness.

Food and resupply

A town's shops. Restock here before Queensferry.
