Mochrum Fell

Mochrum Fell tops out at 317m on the NX-grid moors above Corsock, well within the Stewartry. The little summit looks out over a chain of small lochans towards the Galloway Hills proper.

From Corsock village take farm tracks past Mochrum farm and cut up onto open hillside. An hour and a half to two hours suffices for a relaxed return walk.

Terrain

Pasture, juniper scrub and short heather make up the route, with a small rocky tor at the top providing the cairn site.

In winter

Rarely under snow, the hill is an excellent low-key winter outing. Frozen ground around the lochans is normally firm enough for safe walking.

Outside the SAIS network. No Scottish Avalanche Information Service forecast covers Mochrum Fell. SAIS forecasts six areas only — Northern and Southern Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh, Lochaber, Glencoe and Torridon — and this hill is outside all of them, so there is no avalanche forecast to read for it. In winter, use MWIS Southern Uplands ↗ for mountain weather, judge snow stability from first principles, and treat any cornice or wind-loaded slope with extra caution.
