Ruin Dorcha combines a bothy night with 5,000 years of history. Walk through Kilmartin's standing stones and burial cairns on the way in, then sleep in the hills above. Scotland does not get more layered than this.

Getting there

From Kilmartin village, follow tracks north then west into the hills. Allow 2 hours.

Small MBA bothy in fair condition with a fireplace. Space for 4. Remote enough to be quiet despite Kilmartin's tourist traffic.

Kilmartin Glen — 350+ ancient monuments including cairns, standing stones and rock art. Crinan Canal. Dunadd fort — capital of the ancient kingdom of Dal Riata.

When to visit

Accessible year-round. The Argyll climate is mild and wet. The archaeological sites in the glen are fascinating in any season.
