Our take

Glenbatrick is an expedition. Two ferries to reach Jura, then a half-day walk across boggy terrain to the Atlantic coast. The reward is a bothy on a wild island where deer outnumber people 30 to 1. Orwell found his inspiration here. You might find yours.

Getting there

From Craighouse, follow the road north then rough tracks west to the coast. The terrain is boggy and pathless in sections. Allow 3.5–4 hours. Ferry from Islay to reach Jura.

Nearest parking: Craighouse, Jura (ferry from Islay)

What to expect inside

Small MBA bothy in fair condition with a fireplace and space for 4. The west coast setting faces nothing but Atlantic. Driftwood for fuel.

Nearby hills & attractions

The Paps of Jura (Beinn an Oir, 785m) are the island's dominant feature. The Corryvreckan whirlpool lies to the north. George Orwell wrote 1984 at Barnhill, further north.

When to visit

Ferry access from Islay (Kennacraig → Port Askaig → Feolin). Best May–September. Jura's raised beaches and deer herds are remarkable year-round.
