The Cuillin Ridge of Skye is statistically the most accident-prone mountain range in Scotland, but the phrase "dangerous" needs unpacking. The route is not capricious — the hazards are well-known and well-documented. The danger lies in attempting it without the skills it demands, in weather windows that close, or with a compass you trust.

It is not a substitute for proper training, a guidebook or a mountain guide — but it should give you an honest read on whether to commit.

How many accidents happen?

Skye Mountain Rescue Team responds to 40–80 incidents per year, with the Cuillin (both Black and Red) accounting for the large majority. In a typical year there are 1–4 fatalities on the Cuillin. The team's annual statistics show the principal categories:

  • Slips and falls on exposed scrambling terrain — most common
  • Benighted parties unable to complete the ridge in daylight
  • Route-finding errors leading to commitment to wrong terrain
  • Medical emergencies (cardiac, dehydration, hypothermia) far from the road
  • Falls during abseiling — less common but typically serious

The In Pin, the TD Gap area, and the descents from Sgùrr nan Gillean and Sgùrr Alasdair appear disproportionately in accident reports.

The risk profile is highly skewed: experienced mountaineers in good conditions have very low incident rates. Inexperienced parties in marginal conditions have very high ones.

The principal hazards

1. Exposure and the consequence of a slip

The ridge is narrow, often knife-edge, and a slip on most sections has consequences ranging from "serious injury" to "fatal." Unlike a normal Scottish hillwalk where a slip on grass slope is uncomfortable, here the ground falls hundreds of metres into corries.

The mitigation is technique and concentration — keep three points of contact on scrambling sections, place feet deliberately, use the rope on doubtful pitches.

2. The magnetic compass problem

The Cuillin gabbro contains enough iron-rich minerals to deflect a magnetic compass by tens of degrees in places. You cannot navigate the ridge by compass. This is the single most underestimated hazard.

The standard practice is to navigate by terrain features, an altimeter (set carefully at known points), and GPS. In cloud, you keep the ridge crest. You do not bear off the ridge on a compass bearing because the bearing is wrong.

Several serious accidents in the historical record involve parties using a compass to bail off the ridge in cloud and walking into the wrong corrie. Most of those corries end in cliffs.

3. Loose rock

Most Cuillin rock is solid gabbro, but several sections — particularly the descent from Sgùrr Dearg into Coire Lagan, the chimneys around the Bhasteir Tooth, and parts of An Caisteal — contain loose blocks. Helmets are mandatory. Stone-fall from parties above is a known hazard at the In Pin in particular.

4. Weather change

The Cuillin sit directly in the path of Atlantic weather systems and pick up cloud and rain before any surrounding ground. A perfect dawn can become a cloud-and-drizzle ridge by mid-morning, and once cloud descends the route-finding problem multiplies. The standard plan is to start at first light, use the morning's stable air, and finish before afternoon convection builds.

Lightning is rare in Scotland but on the ridge it is a genuine concern. Get off the ridge immediately if a storm is approaching.

5. Wet gabbro and basalt

Wet gabbro is still acceptable to climb on — the rock is friction-rich enough to grip when damp. Wet basalt (which appears in dykes crossing the ridge in several places) is slippery and treacherous. A misread of "the rock is fine" can be a serious error in the wrong place.

6. Limited bail-out options

From the central ridge between Sgùrr a' Mhadaidh and the In Pin, the only realistic bail-out is down Coire na Banachdich on the west side — a long, rough descent in any conditions and seriously committing in poor ones. Coire a' Ghreadaidh and Coir' an Lochan are not friendly descents.

The practical implication: once you are on the ridge, you finish it. Plan accordingly.

7. Fatigue-driven error

The ridge is a 16–24 hour effort. Most accidents happen later in the day when concentration drops. Parties that have moved well to the In Pin still have over half the technical content of the route ahead.

Who has accidents on the Cuillin

Looking at MRT reports across the last decade, a few patterns:

  • Parties without abseil experience caught at the In Pin in retreat
  • Parties who hired ropes and harnesses but had not used them in earnest before the ridge
  • Solo walkers who lost the ridge in cloud
  • Hillwalkers with no climbing background who attempted the In Pin direct
  • Experienced UK mountaineers caught out by weather change

The common denominator is rarely "the route is impossibly hard." It is the gap between actual skill and required skill that produces the incident.

How experienced parties manage the risk

  • Conditions selection — the route is only attempted in genuinely settled, dry weather. Multiple-day high-pressure systems, not "should be OK"
  • Pre-route familiarisation — most parties have done the In Pin, Pinnacle Ridge, or a guided day on Skye before attempting the full traverse
  • Short-roping competence — the lead climber needs to be able to put short-rope protection in quickly on the moving-together sections
  • Helmets, harnesses, and abseil rigging — always worn, regardless of how "easy" a section looks
  • GPS plus altimeter as the primary navigation tools — compass relegated to a backup-only role
  • Bivouac kit on the longer day — even single-push parties carry minimal bivvy gear so a forced overnight does not become hypothermia
  • A turn-around time — agreed in advance, observed regardless of progress

Decision framework: should you attempt it?

If you can answer yes to all of these, you are likely ready:

  • I have led multi-pitch Severe rock climbing in mountain settings on rock I trusted
  • I have completed Scottish Grade 3 scrambles (Aonach Eagach, Five Sisters, Forcan) confidently
  • I am comfortable abseiling with a pack, including releasing a stuck rope
  • I have done at least one long mountain day (12+ hours) recently without it being an epic
  • I have done either the Inaccessible Pinnacle as a single-day route or a guided introductory Cuillin day
  • I am comfortable with GPS-based navigation and aware of the magnetic compass issue

If you cannot answer yes to all of these, the safest options are:

  • Hire a Mountaineering Scotland or BMG-qualified mountain guide for the traverse
  • Do an introductory Skye course first to build the missing skills, then return for the traverse next season

Emergency procedures

  • Mountain Rescue: dial 999, ask for Police, then Mountain Rescue. Provide an accurate grid reference and the nature of the incident
  • Phone signal is poor on most of the ridge — text-message-only signal sometimes works when voice does not
  • PLB or satellite messenger is recommended for parties without strong coverage
  • Bivvy in place rather than descending in poor visibility or with a casualty — most rescues are easier if the party stays put
