Beinn Eunaich

Beinn Eunaich (989m) — "fowling hill" — is the eastern Munro of the pair above Glen Strae and Loch Awe, sitting alongside its slightly lower companion Beinn a' Chochuill. The two are almost always climbed together as a fine quieter alternative to the popular Ben Cruachan massif. The summit gives wide-open views across Loch Awe to Kilchurn Castle, the Glen Strae country to the north and the great Cruachan ridge to the west.

Standard route

Glen track 30% · Open hillside 40% · Summit ridge 30%

17km · 870m ascent · 4.8 hrs

Start from the small lay-by at Stronmilchan on the B8077 above Dalmally. Walk north up the rough estate track to the entrance of Glen Strae. Climb the broad south-east ridge of Beinn Eunaich directly to the summit. Descend west to the broad bealach connecting to Beinn a' Chochuill, then climb its summit. Descend the long south-west ridge back to the road. The two-Munro round runs roughly 13km with 1100m of climb.

Terrain

The Stronmilchan estate track is firm landrover surface. The south-east ridge of Beinn Eunaich is rough heather and broken rock with a clearer path higher up. A small cairn marks the high point of a broad summit area. The link west to Beinn a' Chochuill is broad mossy turf. The descent off Chochuill on the south-west ridge is steep wet grass — slippery in the wet.

In winter

A reasonably benign Argyll winter pair. The connecting ridge between Beinn Eunaich and Beinn a' Chochuill drifts but offers few avalanche-prone slopes. The B8077 from Dalmally stays reliably gritted. Phone signal at Loch Awe is reasonable; fades on the tops. SAIS Southern Cairngorms is the closest formal forecast area for guidance.

This hill is in the Glen Coe SAIS forecast area. Check SAIS forecasts in winter (December–April).
