Our take
Warnock Head is the training bothy. Thirty minutes from a village with a pub. If you have never stayed in a bothy and the idea of remoteness worries you, start here. Then graduate to somewhere with a proper walk-in.
Getting there
From Wanlockhead village, follow the track south past the beam engine. Allow 30 minutes. Probably the shortest walk-in of any MBA bothy.
Nearest parking: Wanlockhead village
What to expect inside
Small MBA bothy with a fireplace and space for 4. Clean and well-maintained. The short walk-in from Scotland's highest village makes this exceptionally accessible.
Nearby hills & attractions
Lowther Hill (725m) and Green Lowther (732m) with their radar domes are directly above. Wanlockhead has a lead mining museum. The Southern Upland Way passes through the village.
When to visit
Accessible year-round due to the trivial walk-in. Snow on the Lowther Hills is common in winter but the terrain is gentle. An excellent introduction to bothy life.
