Our take
Alder Bay is the quiet option in the Ben Alder range. Culra gets the crowds; walk further and camp at the bay for the same mountains without the company.
Getting there
From Dalwhinnie, follow the loch shore south. Long and rough. Allow 4.5–5 hours.
Nearest parking: Dalwhinnie
What to expect inside
Small basic shelter with space for 4. No fireplace. The position on the loch is scenic but exposed.
Nearby hills & attractions
Ben Alder (1,148m) is directly above. Loch Ericht. Culra and Ben Alder Cottage are alternative bases.
When to visit
The long approach means this is a summer-only option. The loch-shore position is exposed to wind.
